Chipmunks - Life Style

Chipmunks do not form strong relations with the fellows and are observed in groups during the mating season or when rearing the young. The species communicates using vocalization. In fact, Chipmunks are rather vocal animals. One can hear them "talking" when in the woods. The sounds they produce resemble the bird's chirps. Not all people grasp that they are listening to a Chipmunk for the sounds are easily confused.

Chipmunks use a variety of calls. However, it has not been found out yet what they express. Luckily, these small mammals are very curious and can be frequently seen in the wild. Watching their behavior and registering calls has helped to determine the meaning of some Chipmunk sounds. Thus, squeals and loud cries are produced when a Chipmunk feels danger. It is believed that loud cries help to distract attention of the predator providing for a safe escape. Peculiar sounds are produced also during the mating season to attract opposite-sexed animals.

Chipmunks - Social Life

Despite the fact that Chipmunks appear to be easy to tame and tend to be communicative, they are solitary animals. They live in burrows on their own and meet only during the breeding season. Occasional run-ins occur between Chipmunks. However, these small creatures can hardly be called territorial. They have home ranges that overlap with the home ranges of a few other species. Yet, this does not seem to bother them at all. Males have a larger home range than females. As a rule, Chipmunks live in a constant environment. However, they can move for a better habitat and food resources.

Chipmunks - Habits

Chipmunks live in burrows that are built in brush and hidden from predators. This is a peculiar feature of the Eastern Chipmunk. Western Chipmunks are known to spend most of their time in trees. Usually, a burrow has one entrance leading to a tunnel that ends abruptly and leads to a deep camber covered with grasses and leaves. Chipmunks also use the burrow as a storage place for food supplies.
